Miata Tire Wear (Q1 2023)

Wear Summary

After 4months of use, I’m rotating my RT660s on the miata. They’ve got 7 autocross events on them, most of which had clockwise-biased course designs (see event list below). I noticed that the rears had 1/32” more wear than the fronts, which is consistent with what I noticed last year. Surprisingly, I don’t notice any uneven wear from left to right, despite the clockwise course bias. I have been running these tires at 26psi hot, sometimes with the rears 1psi lower than the fronts. Last year, I ran my RT660s at 29psi, which was what I was used to running with my RS4s. I found that I have better low-speed grip with 26psi, so I’ve been sticking with it for now.

The arrow in the photos indicates the direction I’m rotating the tires; “PF->PR” means it’s currently the passenger front tire and it’s being moved to the passenger rear. The fraction is the tread depth in inches (measured in the little diamond cutouts).

Comparison To Last Year

Here are photos of last year’s set of RT660s, taken at around the same time of year (end of March). I always saw the fronts doing this “peeling” thing. Almost looked like the tire was defective, but I think it was just the way the marbles liked to form on the fronts. I haven’t notice my new set doing this, and the alignment hasn’t changed significantly since then (just corrected some out of whack toe on the driver front). I guess the lower tire pressures I’m running this year got rid of the peeling effect.
