Recently I’ve been thinking about how I can shave weight off the miata. This post shows the results of me breaking down the total weight of the car.
I started by measuring the weight of the car with me in it. The car had about a half tank of gas, but was otherwise in normal street-trim (ie. no spare tire, but scissor jack and floor mats still in).
Once I had the total weight, I started to put together a spreadsheet that broke down the total into its component parts. Some of the items I was able to measure myself, but the remaining weights I researched online.
Conclusion
There are a few things that I don’t have itemized (yet).
- exhaust
- radiator
- intercooler & charge piping
- interior (carpet, dash, etc.)
- wiring
- suspension (coils & struts)
I’m surprised to see that the “Unknown” items total to ~500lbs. I could imagine the above items would total to ~200lbs tops, so that still leaves ~300lbs of “Unknown” weight somewhere in the car. I guess it’s possible that the remaining “Unknown” is just error accumulation. Regardless, this was a pretty fun exercise that only took me about 2hrs to compile together.
